How to move Wix Stores products to another Wix site
By Caner Kaya, Kayabyte
Wix has no button that moves a store from one site to another. Wix lists it as a feature request and gives three workarounds: export your products to CSV and import them on the new site, duplicate the whole site, or transfer the site to another account. Which one fits depends on whether you want the whole site or only the products.
This also applies if you want the new Wix Stores product catalog, because an existing store can’t be switched to it.
First: do you need a new site at all?
- Moving from the Wix Editor to Wix Studio? Wix can now create a Studio version of an Editor site. It needs a Premium plan and keeps your dashboard data, including the store. That’s usually the easiest route.
- Want a copy of everything to redesign? Duplicate the site (below).
- Want the new product catalog, or a clean new site with only your products? Then you’re moving products, and the rest of this guide is for you.
Option 1: duplicate the site
In your site’s dashboard, go to Home, click the Site Actions icon, choose Duplicate Site, name the copy and click Duplicate (Wix guide).
According to Wix’s store feature request, the copy brings products and categories, but not payment methods, shipping rules or tax settings. Wix’s duplicate guide adds that store orders, invoices, contacts, members and third-party app settings aren’t copied.
Wix doesn’t say whether a duplicate gets the new catalog. Since Wix also says existing stores can’t be migrated, don’t count on it.
Option 2: export to CSV and import on the new site
This is the free way to move only the products. Wix’s FAQ confirms you can export from one Wix store and import into another. The steps depend on which product page your sites have.
How to tell which catalog a site uses. Open any product in the dashboard. Wix says that if the first field you see is Images and videos, the site is on the previous version. Otherwise it’s on the new catalog.
On a site with the new catalog (Wix guide):
- Go to Store Products, click More Actions, then Import, then Export Products.
- On the new site, go to Store Products > More Actions > Import, click Continue, upload the file and click Import.
- If some rows fail, use Generate Error CSV to see why, fix them and import again.
Limits: 15 MB and 10,000 rows per file, and only the first 10,000 rows are imported. Every variant and every image is its own row, so a big catalog needs several files. Categories in the file are created, but not nested, so you rebuild subcategories by hand.
On a site with the previous version (export guide, import guide): select products in the product list, click More Actions > Export. The limit is 5,000 rows per file, images go in as URLs (up to 15 per product), and products go into collections rather than categories.
Things that trip people up:
- Digital products can’t be imported. Wix says this is “currently not supported”.
- Moving from the old catalog to the new one. The two CSV formats have different columns (collections become categories, discounts work differently). Wix doesn’t say whether an old export imports into a new-catalog site as it is, so expect to rework the file.
- Images. New-catalog exports contain Wix media IDs, and Wix doesn’t document whether those work on another site. Forum users report variant images not reconnecting after an import. Keep the old site until you’ve checked every product’s images.
- SEO. Wix’s column list has no SEO fields, so custom product SEO titles and descriptions have to be set again.
- Orders, customers, coupons and reviews don’t move with a product CSV.
Can I move my store to the new Wix product catalog?
Not on the same site. Wix says “it is not possible to migrate an existing Wix Stores site to the new product catalog” (feature request), and new sites get it built in.
The new catalog is what gives you subcategories (up to 5 levels), up to 50 images per product, modifiers and more (Wix overview). So the path today is a new site plus moving the products over, with one of the options above.
Where the built-in options stop
- Catalogs with lots of variants and images, where the CSV runs into thousands of rows and images need relinking.
- Old catalog to new catalog, where the file format changes.
- Nested categories, which CSV import can’t create.
- Product SEO settings that you’d otherwise re-enter by hand.
An app that copies products between your sites
Full disclosure: I built Store Copy for this move. You install it on both sites, show a pairing code on the old one and enter it on the new one. It does a dry run first, then copies product names, descriptions, URL slugs and SEO settings, images (up to 15 per product), options and variants with prices, stock, SKUs and weights, custom text fields, brands, ribbons, info sections, and categories including nested ones. Products already on the new site, with the same SKU or name, are skipped, so you can run it again.
What it doesn’t do: it doesn’t copy orders, customers, coupons, reviews, store settings or subscriptions, and it doesn’t move the site design. It only creates products and categories and never changes the old site. It copies into sites on the new catalog only (it can read from either). The free plan copies 10 products, so you can check it on a few of yours first.
It’s on the Wix App Market.
FAQ
Will deleting my old site break the images on the new one? Forum users have warned that it can, and Wix doesn’t document it either way. Before you delete anything, check that the new site’s product images are in its own Media Manager.
Can I transfer my store to someone else’s Wix account? You can transfer a whole site to another account with Site Actions > Transfer Site. Wix says contacts, orders and invoices aren’t copied in a transferred copy (Wix guide).
Why are my subcategories missing? Subcategories only exist on the new catalog. If your site was created before it, there’s no switch for it on that site.
