Wix Stores minimum order quantity, per product or category
By Caner Kaya, Kayabyte
Wix Stores has a built-in minimum order amount (a minimum subtotal for the whole order), and Wix’s free Checkout Requirements app adds a minimum or maximum quantity per product. What Wix can’t do on its own is a minimum for a whole category, a minimum for the total number of items in the cart, or selling only in packs.
Below is how to set up the built-in options first, because for many shops they are enough.
How do I set a minimum order amount on Wix?
This is the “orders must be at least $30” setting. Wix describes it in Setting a minimum order amount:
- In your site’s dashboard, go to Settings.
- Click Store products & Inventory.
- Turn on the Set a minimum subtotal toggle.
- Enter the minimum amount an order must reach to complete checkout.
If you can’t find it there: when Wix launched the feature in 2021 it sat under Settings > eCommerce and Finance > Order settings. The current help article says Store products & Inventory, so look in both places.
A few things to know before you rely on it:
- It’s one amount for the whole order. You can’t set it per product or per category.
- It doesn’t apply to digital products or to store pickup orders.
- In countries where tax is added at checkout (the US and Canada, for example), the cart has to reach the minimum before tax. Elsewhere the tax-inclusive price counts.
- The cart shows the message when it can tell the minimum isn’t met. Otherwise shoppers see it at checkout.
Wix’s article doesn’t say whether coupons are subtracted before the check, or whether shipping counts. If that matters for your margins, place a test order with a coupon before you go live.
How do I set a minimum quantity for one product?
Use Checkout Requirements, a free app made by Wix. Wix explains it in Adding and setting up the Wix Checkout Requirements app:
- Add the app from the Wix App Market (in the Editor, Add Apps, then search for Checkout Requirements).
- In your dashboard, open Checkout Requirements and click Add Requirement.
- Give it a name. Customers won’t see this name.
- Choose the type: Minimum quantity of products, Maximum quantity of products or Minimum order subtotal.
- Choose Specific products or All products.
- Decide what happens when the rule isn’t met: allow checkout with a warning, or disable checkout and show an error. Write the message shoppers will see.
The message appears on the cart page and again at checkout.
One detail catches people out: with All products, the rule applies to each product separately. “Minimum 6” means 6 of every product in the cart, not 6 items in total. Wix’s own example is “a minimum order of 6 unicorn mugs”.
Some reviews of the app say rules didn’t always hold. After you set a requirement up, try it on your live site with a real cart.
Where the built-in options stop
Wix says plainly in a feature request that “it is not possible to place a limit on checkout based on how many items from a category the customer wants to purchase”. The request is still collecting votes.
So these cases have no built-in setting today:
- A minimum for a category. For example, at least 3 items from your socks category, in any mix of colours.
- A minimum for the whole cart, counted in items. “Any 6 products” for a wholesale or tasting box.
- Packs or multiples. Wine sold in 6s or 12s, where 7 bottles shouldn’t be allowed.
- A maximum spend, or a different minimum spend for one category.
- A limit across several products. “At most 2 items from the sale category per order.”
Free workarounds worth trying first
- Make the pack the product. If you only sell in 6s, sell “6 bottles” as the product, or as a product option with its own price. The shopper can’t buy 7, and you need no rule at all.
- Use the minimum subtotal instead. If your real worry is small orders not covering costs, a minimum order amount often does the job better than a quantity rule.
- Look in your checkout settings. Wix says new checkout validations can now be created from your site’s checkout settings (they used to live in Wix Functions, which no longer accepts new functions). I couldn’t find current documentation of which conditions they support, so open Checkout Settings and see what your dashboard offers.
If none of these fit, you need either custom code (Wix’s Validations service plugin, which needs a developer) or an app.
An app for category, cart-wide and pack rules
Full disclosure: I built Order Minimums & Limits for the cases above. You set a minimum or maximum quantity, a pack size, or a minimum or maximum spend, for the whole order, chosen products, or chosen categories. Matching items can be counted together (6 bottles across any wines) or line by line (6 of each wine). When the cart breaks a rule, the shopper sees your message in the cart and at checkout and can’t place the order until it’s fixed.
What it doesn’t do: it only counts Wix Stores products, so bookings and other items are ignored. Spend is measured before shipping, tax and coupons. It doesn’t change prices or give volume discounts. If something goes wrong on the app’s side, the rule is skipped rather than blocking a sale. The free plan runs one rule at a time.
It’s on the Wix App Market.
FAQ
Can I set a minimum quantity for all products in the cart combined? Not with Wix’s built-in settings. Checkout Requirements checks each product on its own. You need custom code or an app for a cart-wide item count.
Does the minimum order amount apply to pickup orders? No. Wix says it doesn’t apply to store pickup orders or to digital products.
Can I limit a product to 1 per customer, for a limited drop? Use the Maximum quantity of products type in Checkout Requirements. It checks the cart being bought. Wix’s article doesn’t say whether it also looks at a customer’s earlier orders, so assume someone could place a second order.
