Holiday rental direct bookings on Wix, with Airbnb sync

Wix’s own tool for overnight stays is Wix Hotels, which can list your property on sites like Booking.com and Airbnb. Wix Bookings is built for appointments and classes, and can’t take multi-night appointments. For a single cabin or apartment, the choice is between Wix Hotels, an outside rental system embedded on your site, or an app.

Here is what each option does, based on Wix’s own documentation.

Can I use Wix Bookings for a holiday rental?

Not really. Wix says “it is not currently possible to create multi-day appointments in Wix Bookings” (feature request). The workaround Wix gives is a custom duration of up to 99 hours, which covers about four nights and doesn’t price per night.

Two more things that matter for rentals:

• Calendar sync. Wix Bookings syncs with your primary Google Calendar (Booking Calendar > Manage > Sync personal calendar). But all-day events don’t block time, and events from other calendars don’t appear in Wix (Wix guide). An Airbnb calendar added to Google by its link becomes a separate calendar, not your primary one, so it won’t block your Wix availability.
• Deposits. A Bookings service can take a fixed deposit online and the rest in person (Price & payment > Payment preferences > Online deposit and the rest in person). Wix says this isn’t available to all users yet (Wix guide).

Wix also has a newer app, Wix Rentals, built on Bookings. Wix says it’s available only on Wix Harmony and needs a Business Premium plan for online reservations (overview). Its developer docs limit daily rentals to 1 to 8 days, and I couldn’t find any calendar sync in its documentation.

Option 1: Wix Hotels

Wix Hotels is Wix’s own app for rooms and properties, with nightly rates, a weekend price, and online booking and payment. There are two versions, and Wix’s comparison page says the newer one, Wix Hotels by HotelRunner, “is not available to everyone yet”.

To add it: in the Wix App Market, search for Wix Hotels, click Add to Site under Wix Hotels by HotelRunner, then Agree & Add, and save your site.

How each version handles Airbnb and other sites:

• Wix Hotels by HotelRunner includes a channel manager once you upgrade your site, and the number of channel connections depends on your plan (Wix guide). Its Airbnb iCal connection is one-way: it sends your availability from Wix to Airbnb, but Airbnb bookings aren’t received, so you enter them by hand (Wix guide).
• The previous Wix Hotels can import an iCal calendar into Wix, one way, with a separate link for each room type (Hotels > Reservations > iCal, Wix guide). Its channel manager costs $15 a month after a 14-day trial and isn’t included in Premium (Wix guide).

If you run a small guesthouse with several rooms and want your Booking.com and Airbnb listings connected from Wix, Wix Hotels is worth trying first. A host renting out one whole apartment has asked in the Wix forum how to stop it showing price “per room”, so check that it suits a whole-property rental before you build around it.

Option 2: embed an outside rental system

If you already use a vacation rental system such as Lodgify, OwnerRez or Hostaway, these offer booking widgets you can place on your site. In the Wix Editor, go to Add Elements > Embed Code > Embed HTML, paste their code and click Apply (Wix guide).

Wix notes that embedded elements are iframes, so they don’t resize like normal Wix elements. Guests then pay in the other system rather than your Wix checkout (Lodgify’s widget, for example, sends them to Lodgify’s checkout), and each system has its own pricing.

Things to decide whatever you choose

• How you’ll avoid double bookings. iCal links share booked dates only, not prices or guest details, and every system refreshes them on its own schedule. A booking made on Airbnb a few minutes ago may not have reached your site yet. Keep this in mind for popular dates.
• How guests pay. To take card payments on a Wix site, connect a payment provider under Accept Payments in your dashboard. This needs a Premium plan that supports payments.
• Deposits and the balance. Decide what guests pay when they book and when the rest is due, and write it in your booking terms.

Where the built-in options stop

• A single cabin or apartment that should be booked by the night, with a minimum stay, a cleaning fee and seasonal prices, without hotel-style rooms.
• Two-way calendar sync where Airbnb or Booking.com bookings block your site’s calendar automatically.
• A deposit as a share of the total, paid through your own Wix checkout.

An app for direct bookings

Full disclosure: I built Stay Direct. It adds a booking calendar to your site for each property. Guests pick dates and the number of guests, and see the full price: nights, extra guest fees, a weekly or monthly discount and the cleaning fee. They pay through your site’s own checkout, either the full amount or a deposit you choose, with the rest due later. Nights are held for 30 minutes while they pay. You set nightly and weekend prices, seasons with their own prices and minimum stays, the shortest and longest stay, notice before arrival and allowed check-in days.

Calendar sync reads your Airbnb, Booking.com or VRBO calendar links about every 15 minutes and blocks those nights, and gives you a link with your direct bookings for those sites to read. There’s no commission on bookings.

What it doesn’t do: it doesn’t take payments itself, so your site needs a Premium plan that accepts payments and a connected payment provider. Calendar sync shares dates only, not prices. Because imported calendars refresh about every 15 minutes, a booking made elsewhere in that window can still overlap, and you’d sort that out yourself. The free plan covers one property.

FAQ

Can Wix sync with my Airbnb calendar? Partly. Wix Hotels by HotelRunner can send your availability to Airbnb through iCal, but it doesn’t receive Airbnb bookings. The previous Wix Hotels can import an iCal link. Wix Bookings doesn’t read Airbnb calendars, even through Google Calendar.

Is there a booking system for short-term rentals on Wix without a commission? Wix Hotels by HotelRunner says no extra fee applies for its channel manager, but the number of channels depends on your plan. Outside rental systems have their own pricing. Check each one’s current terms before you commit.

Can I take a deposit for a stay? In Wix Bookings, yes, as a fixed amount, but Bookings doesn’t handle multi-night stays. Wix Stores has no deposit option today; Wix lists it as a feature request.
