Troubleshooting and FAQ
Nothing is blocked. Check that: - the rule is added to the transition people use to start work (see Get started), - the target status is in the In Progress category (Jira settings → Work items → Statuses), - Check WIP limits is switched on and saved (changes apply within a minute), - the project does not have a project limit of 0, and the assignee is not in an exempt group, - the work item was not created straight into an In Progress status (creation is not checked).
Moving from In Progress to In Review is blocked. It should not be: moves between two In Progress statuses are always allowed. Check that In Progress is really in the In Progress category.
Can I set different limits for different people? Use exempt groups for people who should have no limit. When counting per project, project limits let teams in their own projects have their own limit. Per-person limits are not available in this version.
Does it work with boards that have column limits? Yes. Column limits keep working as before; personal limits are checked in addition.
Someone went over their limit. How? Jira’s search can take a moment to include a work item that was just moved, so two moves in very quick succession can both go through. Work items hidden from apps by permissions are also not counted.
Does it block automation rules? Automation and REST API transitions go through the same workflow rule. Use an exempt group for automation users if needed, or leave the rule off transitions that automation uses.
Does Personal WIP Limits send data anywhere? No. It runs on Atlassian Forge and makes no calls outside Atlassian. See the privacy policy.
