Watching a Confluence page but getting no email? Check these 5 things
By Kayabyte
Someone watches a space or a page, a colleague edits it, and no email arrives. In most cases nothing is broken: Confluence Cloud sends a lot less in real time than people expect. Here is what to check, in the order that solves it most often. Settings and names are as they appear in Confluence Cloud in October 2026.
1. Page edits go into the daily digest by default
Open your profile picture → Settings → Email. The page has two parts that matter here:
- Daily Digest collects recent activity into one email a day. On a new account it includes comments and reactions, new blogs, new pages and live docs, new whiteboards, and page and live doc updates.
- Content I’m watching decides what is emailed in real time. On a new account only Comments, New blog posts and New whiteboards are switched on. New pages and live docs, Page and live doc updates and Attachments are off.
So by default, if you watch a space, you hear about a new page or an edit the next day in the digest, not when it happens. Switch on Page and live doc updates and New pages and live docs under Content I’m watching to get them right away.
Each person sets this for themselves on this page, so if a team relies on edit emails, tell them about this setting.
2. The editor turned off “notify watchers”
When someone publishes an update, they can choose not to notify watchers, which many people do for small fixes. If one person reports missing emails for one page, ask the editor whether they left that option on.
3. Your own changes don’t email you
Notify on my actions is off by default, so you never get an email about your own edits. Test with a second account, or ask a colleague to edit.
4. The person can’t see the page
A watch doesn’t give access. If a page is restricted, or someone lost access to the space, they get no notifications for it, even though the watch still exists. Check the page’s restrictions and the space permissions.
5. They aren’t watching what you think
Watching a space covers all its pages and blog posts. Watching a page covers only that page, not its child pages. Everyone can see what they watch under profile picture → Settings → Watches, and turn individual watches off there.
Autowatch (on by default) makes people watch pages they create, edit or comment on. People are often surprised by emails from pages they once edited, and miss emails from spaces they never watched.
If the problem is that the right people aren’t watching
Points 1 to 5 fix the emails for people who already watch. If the real problem is that a team should watch a space and new joiners never do, see How to make a Confluence group watch a space or page. It covers a script for admins and Group Watchers for Confluence, the app I make that keeps a group’s members watching a space or page as people join and leave. It doesn’t change anyone’s email settings, so point 1 still applies.
