Copying Wix products to another site and keeping colour photos, pre-orders and rich descriptions
By Kayabyte
Short answer: A CSV export and import is the Wix-documented way to move products, but forum users report that it doesn’t reattach the photos that belong to colour or other options, so you relink them by hand. An app that copies product data between two Wix sites can carry them over. Check each of these on a few products first: option photos, pre-order settings, the images and buttons inside descriptions, and products with more than 15 images.
The question
A forum post asked whether product variant images can be connected through a CSV file. The poster put the variant’s image in its own row, but after the import the image wasn’t attached to the variant and wasn’t even loaded on the product page (forum thread). Later posts, from 2023, say the same: one owner with about 2,000 products wanted to connect variants to their images through the CSV instead of one at a time, and another said that relinking every image to its variant by hand after an import is painful. The thread has no solution.
What Wix documents
- Wix’s import template takes images as a list of image links per product, separated by semicolons. The forum thread quotes a limit of 15 images per product from the older import page.
- The new catalog allows more: Wix says the maximum rose from 15 to 50 images per product (Wix overview).
- CSV limits are 15 MB and 10,000 rows per file, with every variant and every image taking its own row (see my guide on moving products).
I did not test a CSV import with option photos for this page. The forum posts are user reports from 2019 and 2023, so check them on your own products.
What to check on a few products first
| Item | Why it can go wrong in a CSV move | Check on the new site |
|---|---|---|
| Photos on colour or other options | Not reattached, per forum reports | Pick each colour: does the gallery switch? |
| Pre-order | Settings can be lost | Open the product: is pre-order still on, with its message? |
| Images and buttons in descriptions | A plain text description keeps no images or buttons | Open the description |
| More than 15 images | Older limit | Count them |
| Extra ribbons | Only some may arrive | Check ribbons |
Moving with an app (mine)
Full disclosure: I make Copy Products & Copy Store. You install it on both sites, show a pairing code on the old one, and enter it on the new one. It does a dry run, then copies. Besides names, prices, stock, SKUs, options and variants, categories and SEO settings, it copies:
- images, up to 50 per product, into the new site’s Media Manager, including the photos on colour or other options;
- pre-orders;
- rich descriptions with their images and buttons;
- up to five ribbons per product.
Limits to know first:
- It copies into sites on the new Wix Stores catalog. It can read from either catalog version.
- Not copied: orders, customers, coupons, reviews, store settings, subscriptions, tax groups, delivery profiles, product tags and videos. Digital products arrive hidden and without their download file.
- Free copies 10 products per site, all runs combined. Copy 500 is $29 one time and Copy Unlimited is $49 one time, bought for the site you copy into.
- Products already on the new site are skipped (same SKU, or same name or URL when one has no SKU).
- I have copied only between my own test sites, and I have not yet copied a product with 16 or more images in a real run on a live store. Test a few products before you copy the rest.
