Wix wholesale minimum order: different rules for wholesale and retail
By Caner Kaya, Kayabyte
Wix Stores has no wholesale mode. Its own suggestion is a members-only store page with duplicated products at wholesale prices. Wix’s minimum order amount and its Checkout Requirements app apply to every shopper the same way, so on their own they can’t give wholesale customers a minimum order that retail customers don’t have.
Below is the built-in setup first, because it covers wholesale prices, and then how to add separate order rules for each group.
How do I sell wholesale on Wix?
Wix describes the workaround in Creating restricted store pages. In short:
- Duplicate each product you want to sell wholesale, and give the copy its wholesale price.
- Put the copies in a new category, for example “Wholesale”.
- Create a new store page that shows only that category.
- In the editor, open Pages & Menu, open the page’s settings, and under Permissions choose Site members. You can allow all members, or specific members by member role or pricing plan.
- In your dashboard, go to Signup & Login Security and choose Only people I manually approve, so you decide who becomes a wholesale member.
- Hide the wholesale page and each wholesale product from search engines. Hidden products also stay out of your site search.
Things to know before you build on this:
- The wholesale products are separate copies. Price changes, photos and descriptions have to be kept up to date in two places.
- Wix’s article says to show the wholesale quantity in the product name, description or options, and notes that inventory doesn’t update automatically from that number. The page itself doesn’t enforce a minimum.
- Wix points larger B2B shops to a dedicated wholesale app (it names SparkLayer).
- Tiered prices for one product, such as “10 for 8 each”, aren’t built in. Wix says in a feature request that each product or variant has one price, and suggests automatic discounts or an app instead.
Can I set a minimum order for wholesale customers only?
Not with the built-in settings. Here is what each one does:
- Minimum order amount (Settings > Store products & Inventory > Set a minimum subtotal) is one amount for every order in the store. It doesn’t apply to digital products or store pickup orders (Wix guide).
- Checkout Requirements, Wix’s free app, adds a minimum or maximum quantity for specific products or all products, or a minimum subtotal (Wix guide). Rules are based on products and the subtotal, not on who is buying.
There is one free workaround that works with the restricted page setup above. Because wholesale shoppers buy the duplicated wholesale products, you can put a minimum on those products in Checkout Requirements: choose Minimum quantity of products, then Specific products, and pick the wholesale copies. Retail products stay unaffected.
The catch is that the rule counts each product on its own. “Minimum 12” means 12 of every wholesale product in the cart, not 12 items in total across the range. And a minimum order amount set in Settings still applies to retail and wholesale alike.
Where the built-in options stop
These come up often for shops that sell to both trade and the public, and Wix has no setting for them today:
- A minimum for wholesale buyers only, on the same products retail customers buy, such as “trade orders must be at least 300”.
- A different minimum for each group, such as 20 for retail and 300 for wholesale.
- A minimum across the whole wholesale range, such as 24 items in any mix.
- Case sizes for trade only, such as wholesale in multiples of 6 while retail buys single bottles.
- A retail cap, such as at most 5 of a product per order for the public, with no cap for trade.
Mark your wholesale customers with a contact label
Whatever you use for the rules, you first need a way to tell Wix who is wholesale. Contact labels are the simplest. Wix explains them in Creating and using contact labels:
- In your dashboard, go to Contacts.
- Click the More Actions icon, then Labels, then + Add Label. Name it, for example, “Wholesale”, and click Done.
- To label a customer, open the contact, click Labels, then + Add Label, choose “Wholesale” and click Add. To label several at once, select them in the list and click Add Labels.
Wix also lets an automation add a label, for example when someone submits your trade account form. Labels are separate from member roles, so if you use roles for the restricted page, give the same customers the label as well.
An app for wholesale and retail rules
Full disclosure: I built Order Minimums & Limits. Each rule has a Who it applies to setting: every shopper, only shoppers with chosen contact labels (for example Wholesale), or every shopper except those with the labels. So you can run two rules side by side:
- Wholesale: only shoppers with the Wholesale label. For example, a spend of at least 300 for the whole order, at least 24 items in any mix, or quantities in multiples of 6.
- Retail: everyone except shoppers with the Wholesale label. For example, at most 5 of each product, or a minimum spend of 20.
A rule can cover the whole order, chosen products, or chosen categories. Matching items can be counted together, per product, or per variant. When a cart breaks a rule, the shopper sees your message in the cart and at checkout and can’t place the order until the cart meets it. This works on the same products for both groups, so you don’t need duplicated wholesale products just for the minimum.
What to know before you rely on it:
- Wix has to know who the shopper is. That happens once they’re logged in, or once they’ve entered their email at checkout. Before that, they count as having no labels. So a wholesale customer browsing without logging in sees the retail rules in the cart. Ask trade customers to log in before they shop.
- It doesn’t set wholesale prices. It only checks quantities and spend. For trade prices, use the restricted page setup above or a pricing app.
- Spend is measured after sale prices and automatic discounts, before coupons and shipping. It only counts Wix Stores products.
- If the app can’t read the shopper’s labels in time, label rules are skipped rather than blocking the sale.
- The free plan runs one rule at a time, so a wholesale rule and a retail rule together need the paid plan.
It’s on the Wix App Market.
FAQ
Can I hide prices from retail visitors and show them only to wholesale members? Not on the same product. The Wix approach is to put the wholesale copies on a members-only page, so only approved members can see that page and its prices.
Does the Wix minimum order amount apply to wholesale members too? Yes. It’s one setting for the whole store, with exceptions only for digital products and store pickup orders.
Can a wholesale minimum count different products together? Not with Checkout Requirements, which checks each product on its own. An app or custom code can count the whole order or a category together.
Do contact labels and member roles do the same thing? No. Member roles control which pages a member can see. Contact labels are for organising contacts, and apps and automations can read them. If you use both, keep them in step.
