WhatsApp chat as evidence: export file vs iPhone backup

By Kayabyte · Last updated 31 October 2026

Short answer: an export file (WhatsApp’s Export Chat) is a plain text file the phone makes when asked: easy to get, but it has no time zone, can be cut off for long chats, and anyone could have edited it. A Finder backup of an iPhone contains WhatsApp’s own database, with exact times, the history that is on the phone and the media the backup holds, but it takes longer to make and only works for an iPhone. Neither proves the messages are genuine, and courts decide what they accept. If it matters, tell a lawyer which one you have before you export anything else.

This guide is practical help, not legal advice.

Side by side

Export file (Export Chat) iPhone backup made in Finder
Works for iPhone and Android iPhone only
What it is A text file, with a .zip of media if you ask WhatsApp’s own database (ChatStorage.sqlite) inside the backup
Times No time zone in the file Exact times as WhatsApp stored them
How much Limited (WhatsApp’s help pages give about 10,000 latest messages with media, 40,000 without) The full history on the phone
Media May leave out older photos and videos Included as far as the backup holds them
Easy to edit Yes: it is a text file The database is not meant to be edited, but nothing here proves it was not
Effort A few taps Cable, Mac and some waiting

What to do first, either way

Making an export file

See iPhone or Android.

Making an iPhone backup

Follow How to make an iPhone backup on a Mac (and encrypt it). WhatsApp has to be on the iPhone, and an encrypted backup needs its password. Android backups are not supported by Exhibitly: for an Android phone use the export file.

What each one can and cannot show

An export file shows what the file says. Exhibitly records its SHA-256 when it reads the file, so later changes can be detected, but that proves nothing about edits made before that. A backup read shows what WhatsApp’s database held at the time of the backup, and Exhibitly reads it as it is without verifying that WhatsApp or the owner did not change it. Anything beyond that, such as proving who wrote a message, is a matter for the court and often needs the phone itself, the other person’s copy, or a witness.

How Exhibitly handles both

Exhibitly 1.1.0 reads WhatsApp export files (.txt or .zip) and WhatsApp inside a Finder iPhone backup, encrypted or not. It then makes the same PDF, Excel file, attachments folder and verification page either way. The verification page states which source it was: for an export file, “a text file made by WhatsApp’s Export chat function, not a read of WhatsApp’s database”, and for a backup, a read of WhatsApp’s own database with the exact times stored. Neither text says the messages are authentic, and both say that whether the material is accepted is for the court. In the app, the question is explained in the import sheet under “Export file or phone backup?”.

Is a WhatsApp export accepted in court?

That is for the court to decide, and rules differ by country and court. Ask a lawyer before you file.
