Limited edition drops on Wix Stores: cap total sales and set sale dates
By Kayabyte
You are releasing 100 candles, a print run or a seasonal batch. You want it to sell out at exactly 100, open at a set time and close on a date. Wix Stores covers part of that with inventory, and a few pieces need a workaround or an app. This guide goes through what Wix does on its own, and where an app helps.
Stop selling at a fixed quantity
For one product, the built-in answer is inventory. In the product’s inventory settings, track the quantity and enter the number you have. When it reaches zero, the product shows as out of stock. Wix’s pre-order feature can also take orders past zero up to a limit you set, and Wix notes you need tracked inventory to set that limit. With variants, the pre-order limit is set per variant.
Where this stops: inventory is counted per product or variant. A cap of 100 across several colours or across a whole collection, for example “100 of the autumn set in total”, isn’t one number in Wix’s inventory. You’d have to split the stock yourself and keep each variant’s count in step by hand.
Open and close sales at set times
Wix’s help pages describe showing and hiding a product by hand. A feature request page, Scheduling product visibility, says you can’t schedule when a product appears or goes away. Check it, as Wix changes things often. The options without an app:
- Hide the product until launch, then switch it on yourself at the time you announced. It works if you’re at your desk at the launch.
- Take down the product by hand on the closing date.
Limit how many one customer can buy
Wix’s Checkout Requirements app can set a minimum or maximum quantity for a product per order. A limit of 1 per order stops one big basket, not a customer placing several orders. See Minimum order and quantity limits on Wix: every option compared for the options that exist, including per-customer rules in other apps.
An app for drops
Full disclosure: Order Minimums & Limits is our app. Its Pro plan has two settings for drops:
- Limited run: stop selling after a set number of units sold in total. A rule can cover chosen products or categories, so 100 across all colours is one number. It counts approved orders that aren’t fully refunded, and refunded units come back. You can recount from the dashboard.
- Sale dates: the shopper can’t check out the rule’s items before the opening time or after the closing time, using your site’s time zone.
When the cart asks for more than what is left, or the run is over, the shopper sees your message in the cart and at checkout (use placeholders for the numbers) and can’t place the order until it changes.
Limits to know:
- It blocks checkout, and the product still shows on the page, so say “sold out” or the opening date in the product description or your message.
- It has no per-customer rules, so it can’t stop one customer buying again in a later order.
- Two checkouts at the same moment can briefly pass the cap: the count is read with a short cache. Keep a small margin for high-demand drops.
- If the app can’t check a rule, it lets the order through so the sale isn’t lost.
- Limited runs and sale dates are on Pro: $5.99 a month, or $4.99 a month billed yearly, with a 14-day trial. Free covers up to 2 whole-order or product rules plus ordering hours.
It’s on the Wix App Market.
Plan for a drop
- Decide the total quantity and the exact opening and closing time, with the time zone.
- Hide the product until you’ve tested a test order.
- Write the sold-out message you want shoppers to see.
- Test with two orders near the limit, one that fits and one that doesn’t.
- Afterwards, check the count against your Orders list.
FAQ
Can Wix close a product automatically on a date? As far as we could find, not for products in Wix Stores. Wix has a feature request open for scheduling product visibility.
Does inventory count work across variants? Inventory is tracked per product or variant. For one total across several, split the stock or use an app with a total cap.
What happens to refunded orders in a limited run? In Order Minimums & Limits, a fully refunded order stops counting, and refunded units of a partly refunded order are subtracted.
Does it work for Wix Restaurants? It has daily dish limits for restaurant orders on Pro, which is a different rule type.
