Burn rate and run-out date calculator
Enter a budget in money or hours, the start date and what has been spent so far, and get the daily and weekly burn rate, the run-out date, the percentage used and an estimate at completion, with every formula shown. It runs in your browser: nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How it is calculated
- Days so far counts calendar days from the start date to today, both included, the way Burnrate counts them.
- Daily burn is spent divided by days so far. If you give the spend of the last 28 days, the pace is that spend divided by the days in the window (28, or fewer if the project is younger).
- Run-out date is today plus remaining budget divided by daily burn, rounded up to whole days.
- Estimate at completion is spent plus the remaining estimate in hours times the hourly rate (or plus the remaining hours, for an hours budget).
Calendar days mean a weekend counts as a day with no spend, so the daily burn is lower than a per-working-day figure and the run-out date lands later than a plan that assumes work every day. A short pace window swings a lot: a quiet week or a launch week can move the run-out date by weeks, so treat the date as a warning, not a promise.
Computing it from Jira worklogs
Burnrate does this sum for you from Jira worklogs, with hourly rates that change over time. Its pace is the average spend per day over the last 28 days within the budget's period, Projected is that pace carried to the end of the period, Runs out is the day the budget is used up at that pace, and Estimate at completion adds the remaining estimates of open work items priced at the budget's average cost per hour. It is free for up to 10 users. For the manual way, see How to track project cost and budgets in Jira from worklogs.
FAQ
How do I calculate when a project budget will run out? Divide the budget that is left by the daily burn rate, then add that many days to today. The daily burn rate is spend so far divided by the days since the start, or the spend of the last 28 days divided by 28 if you want it to follow recent work.
What is the difference between burn rate and run rate? Burn rate is how fast the budget is being used, in money or hours per day or week. Run-out date is the date that rate would use up the remaining budget.
What is estimate at completion? It is what the project will have cost when the open work is done: spent so far plus the remaining estimated hours times the hourly rate.
