Export text messages for court: Android vs iPhone
By Kayabyte · Last updated 2 November 2026
Short answer: on an iPhone, back it up to a Mac in Finder and export the messages with an app such as Exhibitly, or print them from Messages on the Mac. On an Android phone, Exhibitly cannot read your text messages (SMS) or your Android backups; it only reads WhatsApp export files from Android. For Android texts, use careful screenshots, an SMS backup app that saves them to a file, or ask a lawyer about a professional extraction. Courts decide what they accept, so ask a lawyer.
Side by side
| iPhone | Android | |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in export of a conversation | No | None on most phones |
| Most complete copy | A backup made in Finder on a Mac | An SMS backup app’s file, or a professional extraction |
| Exhibitly reads | iMessage, SMS and RCS from a Finder backup or from Messages on a Mac, and WhatsApp | WhatsApp export files only (not Android SMS, not Android backups) |
| Free route | Screenshots, or File, Print, Save as PDF from Messages on a Mac | Screenshots |
| Needs a Mac | Yes, for Exhibitly | Yes, for Exhibitly’s WhatsApp import |
On an iPhone
- Make a backup in Finder: how to make an iPhone backup on a Mac.
- Export the conversation with date, time and sender on every message; see how to print text messages from iPhone for court.
- Check every page, keep the phone and do not delete the conversation.
On an Android phone
- Screenshots: fine for a few messages. Show timestamps and phone numbers, work from top to bottom, and keep the originals.
- An SMS backup app: apps such as SMS Backup & Restore (SyncTech) save messages to an XML file on the phone, and SyncTech offers an online viewer. Per SyncTech’s own pages (checked 2 November 2026), printing a conversation to PDF can be problematic and RCS support varies by source, so test with a real conversation before relying on it. We have not tested it with Exhibitly and Exhibitly does not read that file.
- WhatsApp on Android: export the chat and use Exhibitly’s Android WhatsApp guide. This one works.
- A professional extraction: for a formal case, a forensic examiner can copy the phone. Ask your lawyer.
What a court may want, on either phone
The original phone, the whole conversation or clear gaps, and you confirming the messages are genuine. A PDF does not make messages authentic. See what a court-ready PDF of text messages should show.
Questions
Can I export text messages from an Android phone to a PDF? Most Android phones have no built-in export of a conversation. You can screenshot messages, use an SMS backup app, or ask a lawyer about a professional extraction. Exhibitly does not read Android SMS.
Can Exhibitly read an Android backup? No. It reads an iPhone backup made in Finder, Messages on a Mac and WhatsApp export files (iPhone or Android).
Is exporting from an iPhone different from Android for court? The goal is the same: date, time and sender on every message, the whole conversation and the original phone kept. On an iPhone the most complete route is a Finder backup read by an app.
Does Exhibitly export iMessage, SMS and RCS? Yes, from an iPhone backup or from Messages on a Mac, along with WhatsApp chats.
