Text messages as evidence for an I-751 or marriage-based immigration case
By Kayabyte · Last updated 2 November 2026
Short answer: USCIS’s I-751 page asks for “as many documents as you can” showing the marriage was entered in good faith, and it does not name specific examples. Immigration lawyers often list text messages and other correspondence among supporting evidence, next to joint finances, a shared home, photos and statements, but no single item decides a case. If you include messages, a dated, numbered PDF of a representative selection is easier to review than screenshots. This is general information, not legal advice; ask an immigration lawyer what to file.
What USCIS says (checked 2 November 2026)
The I-751 page, last reviewed 16 June 2026, says to “submit copies of documents indicating that the marriage upon which you were granted status was entered in good faith” and “as many documents as you can to establish this fact”. It calls its checklist informational. Read the current form instructions, because requirements and editions change.
Making messages easier to review
- Choose a sensible selection. Messages from different periods of the relationship, rather than every message ever sent, are usually easier for an officer to read. Ask your lawyer how much to include.
- Show date, time and sender on every message, with phone numbers where they exist.
- Add context. A few messages before and after a key message avoids the look of cherry-picking.
- Translate if needed. USCIS generally requires a full English translation with the translator’s certification for documents in another language. Ask your lawyer.
- Keep the originals on your phone and do not delete the conversation.
- Protect other people. Redact third-party details that are not relevant, and keep an unredacted copy.
Steps with Exhibitly
- Back up your iPhone to your Mac in Finder, or use the messages already in Messages on your Mac. For WhatsApp, export the chat or use a Finder backup.
- Open Exhibitly and choose the conversation.
- Pick a date range, or the messages that matter with some context, for the period you want to show.
- Redact anything not relevant or not yours to share.
- Export. You get a numbered PDF with date, time and sender on every message, an Excel file, the original attachments and a verification page. The Evidence Bundle adds an exhibit cover page and Bates numbers, which USCIS does not require.
Exhibitly reads an iPhone backup, Messages on a Mac and WhatsApp; it does not read Android SMS or other chat apps. It does not decide what is enough evidence. Download Exhibitly (free preview, 50 messages per export).
Questions
Are text messages accepted as evidence for an I-751? They can be submitted as part of a package, but USCIS’s page does not single them out. Many lawyers include selected correspondence next to other evidence. Ask an immigration lawyer.
Should I submit every text message? Usually not. A representative selection across the relationship with dates and context is easier to review. Your lawyer can advise on the amount.
Do messages in another language need translating? USCIS generally requires a full English translation with a certification for foreign-language documents. Check the current instructions or ask a lawyer.
Can Exhibitly export WhatsApp or iMessage for immigration evidence? Yes, iMessage, SMS, RCS and WhatsApp from an iPhone backup or Messages on a Mac, and WhatsApp export files. It does not read Android SMS.
