Free shipping for light orders only, weight rates for the rest: what Wix Stores can do
By Kayabyte
A shop owner asked on the Wix Studio forum for a shipping setup that sounds simple: orders under 5 kg ship free once the cart is over about 100, smaller carts pay 15, and heavier orders pay 17, 20 or 25 by weight band, whatever the cart is worth. Wix’s support team had told them it couldn’t be done, and the one reply suggested custom code (forum thread, July 2024). This page goes through what Wix Stores does here, the nearest thing you can set up without code, and how to build the exact version with an app.
What Wix Stores does
In a shipping region you can add a Rate by weight rule. You enter weight ranges with a price for each, up to 30 ranges. The same rule has an optional tick box to offer free shipping when the customer’s order reaches an amount you set (Wix guide).
Wix is also open about the limit. Its help centre says it isn’t currently possible to combine shipping rules based on weight with shipping rules based on price, and lists the request for it as open (Wix feature request). Wix’s own example is close to this question: free shipping over a certain order value, plus a charge for heavy items.
In practice, as I read Wix’s pages, the free-shipping tick box belongs to the whole rule. It doesn’t have a “light orders only” setting, and Wix’s pages don’t describe one. I haven’t found a way to switch it off for heavy carts.
What you can do without an app
Pick the closest of these and accept what it gives up.
- Free over an amount for every weight. Keep one Rate by weight rule with your weight ranges and tick the free shipping box. Everything over the amount ships free, heavy orders too. That’s fine if your heavy orders are rare or the margin covers them, and it’s the simplest to explain to customers.
- Weight ranges only. Drop the free-shipping part and let weight set the price. A light cart under 5 kg pays the first range price however much it’s worth.
- A free shipping coupon. Wix lets you create a free shipping coupon with a minimum order subtotal (Wix guide). It’s a code the customer enters, and it has no weight condition either, so it does the same as the tick box with an extra step.
- Custom code. The forum reply points to the Additional Fees service plugin. It needs a developer and a coded rule, so it’s a project, not a setting.
Building the exact version with an app (mine)
Full disclosure: I make Shipping Rate Rules, an app that adds your own shipping options to the Wix Stores checkout. Every option has conditions for when it is offered, and a price built from a table by weight, cart value or number of items. Two options cover the forum question:
- Light carts. Offered up to 5 kg. Price table by cart value: up to 99.99 pays 15, “and above” pays 0.
- Heavy carts. Offered from 5.01 kg. Price table by weight: up to 10 kg pays 17, up to 15 kg pays 20, “and above” pays 25.
Give both the same name, for example “Shipping”, so shoppers see one line. The limits in the conditions are inclusive, so the two options are set to touch without overlapping.
I checked this pair against the app’s own rate engine with a set of test carts. A 3 kg cart worth 50 pays 15 and one worth 100 or more ships free. A 7 kg cart pays 17 whether it’s worth 50 or 250, a 12 kg cart pays 20 and a 20 kg cart pays 25. No cart gets both options.
Things to know before you use it:
- The small gap. A cart weighing between 5 and 5.01 kg, such as 5.005, matches neither option. If your products have weights with one or two decimals this is rare. The dashboard has a test a cart box where you can try weights before you save.
- It needs the paid plan. The free plan runs one option at a time, and this setup needs two.
- You add the app to each shipping region in Wix, and keep one of the store’s own rates or a pickup option in the region as well. Wix only asks the app for prices in regions where it is added. The app can also give a “Rate when nothing fits” for carts no option covers, which is off by default.
- It uses the weights you’ve set on your products. Add a weight to every product, or set a default weight in the option for products with none. No live carrier rates, no pricing by distance and none by box size.

FAQ
Can Wix Stores give free shipping only on light orders? Not as one setting. Free shipping above an amount is a tick box on the rule and, as far as Wix documents it, it applies to every weight in that rule. An app with separate options per weight can do it.
Can Wix combine weight-based and price-based shipping rules? Wix says not at the moment and keeps the request open.
How many weight ranges does Rate by weight allow? Up to 30 per rule.
