UK postcode shipping on Wix: London zones, Highlands and exact districts
By Caner Kaya, Kayabyte
Wix Stores shipping regions stop at country level, or state and province level where Wix offers it. They never go down to UK postcodes. Postcodes are only available for local delivery, where you can list full or partial postcodes. That works well for delivering around your own town, but it has no setting for “everywhere in the UK except these postcodes”, which is what a Highlands and Islands surcharge needs.
Here is how far the built-in options go for UK shops, and then an app route for district-level rates.
A quick note on UK postcodes
A postcode like SW11 1AA has two halves. The first half, SW11, is the outward code: the area (SW) plus the district (11). The second half is the inward code. Most shipping rules work on the area or the district.
This matters because postcodes that look alike can be far apart. SW1 is Westminster, SW11 is Battersea. N1 is Islington, N10 is Muswell Hill. A rule that simply checks “starts with SW1” catches both. Also, London postcode districts don’t line up with Tube fare zones, so “zone 1 delivery” has to be written as a list of postcode districts you choose.
Option 1: one UK-wide rate
For many shops this is enough. In your dashboard, go to Settings > Shipping, delivery & fulfillment, open your UK region, and add a rate: a flat rate, or a rate by weight, by order price or by number of items with up to 30 ranges (Wix overview). A region can be “a country, a group of countries, or states/provinces within a country” (Creating shipping and delivery regions), so you can give the UK its own prices, separate from Europe and the rest of the world.
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man have their own country codes, separate from the United Kingdom. If you ship there, check which of your regions includes them.
Option 2: local delivery by postcode
If you deliver yourself around your own city, use local delivery. Wix explains it in Setting up a local delivery option:
- In Shipping, delivery & fulfillment, open a region (or create one), add a rate and choose Local delivery.
- Under the delivery area, choose Zip / postal codes.
- Enter full postcodes, or partial codes followed by an asterisk.
- Choose the rate type (free, flat, by weight, by price or by quantity), and set delivery days or time slots.
You can add up to 50 local delivery areas per region, each with its own rate. So “central London 5, outer London 9” is possible as two areas.
An asterisk covers everything that starts with those characters (Wix guide). For UK districts, that means SW1* also covers SW11 to SW19. To mean Westminster only, list its sub-districts instead: SW1A*, SW1E*, SW1H*, SW1P*, SW1V*, SW1W*, SW1X* and SW1Y*. Wix’s article doesn’t say how it treats the space in a UK postcode, so enter one real postcode from each area at checkout before you go live.
Local delivery is built for delivering in your own area. Wix doesn’t describe it as a way to price national carrier shipping by postcode.
Where the built-in options stop
- A Highlands and Islands surcharge. Shipping regions can’t single out postcodes, and local delivery only adds areas. It can’t take them away from your normal UK rate, so a shopper in Inverness still sees the cheaper rate.
- Exact districts in one list, such as SW1 but not SW11, without writing out every sub-district.
- Postcode pricing for carrier shipping across the UK, rather than for deliveries in your own area.
- Per-kg pricing above a base weight for a postcode zone, beyond the 30 ranges of a rate table.
An app for UK postcode rules
Full disclosure: I make Shipping Rate Rules. You create shipping options, and each one can be limited to countries, regions and postcodes, with a second list of postcodes to exclude. An entry in either list can be:
- An area, such as IV or HS, which covers every postcode that starts with those letters.
- A district, such as SW1, N1 or PH21, written without a space. It matches that whole district and nothing else: SW1 covers SW1A, SW1P and the rest, but not SW11. N1 doesn’t match N10 to N19, and PH21 doesn’t match PH2 1AB.
- A sector or a full postcode, written with its space, such as PH2 1 or SW1A 1AA. Without the space, PH21 would mean the district.
Capital letters don’t matter, and neither does how the shopper types their postcode: “sw1a1aa” and “SW1A 1AA” are the same postcode. Each option has its own price: a table by weight, cart value or number of items, a price per kg above an included weight, free shipping above an amount, and a lowest and highest price.
Example: a London courier option
Create an option called “London courier, next day”, limit it to the United Kingdom, and list the postcodes, for example EC, WC, SW1, W1, SE1 and E1. Keep your normal UK option with no postcode list. Shoppers in those districts see both options and choose. Everyone else sees only the normal one.
Example: a Highlands and Islands surcharge
Use two options, both limited to the United Kingdom, and the same list of surcharge postcodes in each:
- Standard UK delivery has no postcode list, and puts the surcharge postcodes under Exclude these postcodes.
- Highlands and Islands delivery has the same surcharge postcodes as its postcode list, with its higher price.
Carriers publish their own surcharge lists, so copy yours. Commonly they include the whole HS, IV, KW and ZE areas, parts of AB, FK, KA, PA and PH (for example PH17 to PH26 and PH30 to PH44, but not PH1 to PH16 around Perth), the Isle of Wight (PO30 to PO41), the Isles of Scilly (TR21 to TR25) and Northern Ireland (BT). Enter districts one by one, such as PH17, PH18 and so on. A shopper in Perth (PH1) sees only the standard option, a shopper in Kingussie (PH21) only the surcharge one.
The dashboard’s Test a cart box lets you try a postcode against each option before you save. Test a few from each side of the line, such as PH2 1AB (Perth) and PH21 1AA (Kingussie).
What it doesn’t do:
- No live carrier rates, no pricing by distance or by package size.
- An option with a postcode list only appears once the shopper has entered a postcode. Exclusions also apply only once there is a postcode, so before that the cart can show the standard option to everyone.
- You add the app to your UK region in your shipping settings (Manage Your Apps) with a backup rate, which Wix shows if no option fits or the app doesn’t answer in time. If the region also keeps its own Wix rates, shoppers see both.
- The free plan runs one shipping option at a time, so the examples above need the paid plan.
It’s on the Wix App Market.
FAQ
Can Wix charge more for the Scottish Highlands? Not with built-in shipping regions, which don’t go down to postcodes. You need a postcode-aware shipping app or custom code.
Can I stop orders to Northern Ireland or the Channel Islands? Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man have their own country codes, so leave them out of your shipping regions. Northern Ireland postcodes (BT) are part of the United Kingdom, so treating them differently needs postcode rules.
Why does my SW1 rule also match SW11? Because a partial postcode with an asterisk matches everything that starts with it. List the sub-districts (SW1A, SW1P and so on) or use a rule that treats SW1 as a whole district.
Do London postcodes match Tube zones? No. Decide which postcode districts count as “central” for your delivery, and list those.
