Balanced: Bank Statement Converter

Balanced turns bank and card statements (PDF, scanned PDF or CSV) into clean files for your accounting and budgeting software on your Mac, checks that the numbers add up, and never sends a statement anywhere.

What it does

You open a statement. Balanced finds the transaction table, shows it to you, and exports it in the format your software wants: dates, descriptions and amounts in the right columns, the right signs, and one row per transaction, including the ones that wrap onto two lines in the PDF.

There is no AI guessing: every number is copied from your statement and checked. Balanced reads the words and their positions on the page, applies fixed rules, and then proves the result with arithmetic.

The totals check

Opening balance + transactions = closing balance, or Balanced tells you exactly where it doesn’t.

Most conversion mistakes are quiet: a dropped row, a debit that became a credit, a page-break line that was merged into the wrong row. The statement itself contains the proof. Balanced reads the opening and closing balance, adds up the transactions it found, and compares. If the statement shows a running balance on each row, it checks every row too. When something is off, you see the difference and the rows involved, so you can fix a column or a date order in the preview. If you export while the check fails, Balanced asks you to confirm “Export anyway” first. Read more in Why converted statements don’t add up.

Private

Your statements are opened and converted on your Mac. They are not uploaded, there is no account, and the app has no analytics. It talks to the internet only to check your licence and to look for updates. See the privacy policy and Private bank statement converter for Mac.

Any bank, ten languages

Balanced doesn’t have a list of supported banks. It finds the table from how the words sit on the page and recognizes column headings and month names in English, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. Layouts differ, so check the preview. If a column is misread, change its role (date, description, debit, credit, amount, balance), the date order or the sign handling, and the table updates. Balanced remembers the fix as a saved layout for that bank, so next month’s statement opens right.

Balanced can’t do everything: a very skewed or low-quality scan may not be readable, and a PDF protected with a password has to be unlocked first with the password from your bank.

How it works

  1. Open a statement: drag in a PDF, scan or CSV.
  2. Check the table in the preview and the totals check at the top.
  3. Export in the format you need, to the folder you choose.

Questions

Does it use AI? No. Balanced uses rules and arithmetic. Nothing is guessed or generated, and nothing is sent to a model.

Is the free version a time-limited trial? No. It never expires. It converts and checks everything and exports the first 10 transactions per file, so you can test it on your own statements.

What if the totals don’t match? Balanced shows the difference and the rows involved. Most of the time it is a column role, a date order or a sign that needs one click to fix. If the statement itself is missing a page, the check will tell you that too.

Does it work for credit cards? Yes. Card statements often list purchases as positive numbers; Balanced lets you choose how signs are handled and checks the result against the statement balances.

Will it work with my bank? Likely, but we can’t promise every layout. Try the free version on your own statement; the preview and the totals check show you before you pay.
