How to take kennel and dog daycare bookings on a Wix site
By Caner Kaya, Kayabyte
A kennel, cattery or dog daycare needs three things from online booking that a salon or a yoga studio doesn’t: a stay that runs over several nights, a limited number of spaces each night, and a price that depends on how many pets come and how big they are. Most boarding businesses also want each pet’s vaccination record before the pet arrives.
Wix Bookings was built for sessions, not stays, so none of this is a single setting. Here is what you can do with Wix’s own tools, how far each option goes, and where you need something extra.
Overnight boarding with Wix Bookings
Wix Bookings has no multi-night appointments. Wix says in a feature request that “it is not currently possible to create multi-day appointments in Wix Bookings”. Multi-day classes and courses do exist, but they run on dates you set, not on the dates a pet owner picks.
The workaround Wix suggests is a custom appointment duration of up to 99 hours. For boarding that means:
- A stay can’t be longer than about four nights.
- The price is per appointment, not per night, so a two-night stay and a four-night stay cost the same unless you make a separate service for each length.
- An appointment takes a staff member’s time, not a space in the kennel, so the calendar won’t stop at “8 dogs tonight”.
For short stays you can live with that. For a kennel that takes week-long bookings over the holidays, it’s usually easier to take requests and confirm them by hand (see below).
Daycare as a Wix Bookings class
Daycare fits Wix Bookings better, because a day is a session. Create the day as a class that repeats on your opening days, and set Max participants to the number of dogs you take (Creating a class). When the day is full, it stops taking bookings.
A few things to know:
- If you allow group bookings (more than one participant in a booking), an owner can book two dogs in one go. Each dog counts as a participant, and as far as I can tell each one pays the full price. I couldn’t find a built-in discount for the second dog.
- For different prices by size, you can use Varied prices in the Price & payment section and add options such as “Small dog” and “Large dog” (Selecting how you charge). The owner chooses the option, so it relies on honest answers, and Wix notes that sessions bought with price options can’t be rescheduled by the client.
- Half days need their own class, with its own capacity. A half-day booking and a full-day booking don’t share the same spaces.
Vaccination records and pet details
This part Wix does well. Wix Bookings booking forms can have extra fields, including file uploads (Setting up booking forms):
- Go to Booking Settings in your site’s dashboard and click Booking form.
- Edit the default form, or click + Create New Form to make one just for boarding.
- Add a file upload field for the vaccination record (under General), and text fields for the pet’s name, breed, feeding and medication notes, and the vet’s phone number.
- Mark the fields you can’t do without as required, and save.
The upload belongs to that booking’s form answers. I couldn’t find a way to keep it with the pet, so expect returning customers to upload it again.
Deposits
Wix Bookings can take an online deposit with the rest paid in person: in the service’s Price & payment section, choose Online deposit and the rest in person under Payment preferences and enter the deposit amount. Wix notes that this isn’t available to everyone yet, that it needs an online payment method, and that it can’t be combined with manual approval of bookings.
The free fallback: a request form you confirm by hand
Many kennels skip the booking calendar and use a form instead. A form with the drop-off and pick-up dates, the number of pets, each pet’s details and a vaccination record upload, set to email you when someone sends it. You check your spaces, reply with the price and take payment however you usually do.
It costs nothing and handles any length of stay. The cost is your time: every booking is an email exchange, owners don’t see a price or know if you have space until you answer, and nothing stops two people asking for the last space on the same night.
Where the built-in options stop
None of these has a setting in Wix today:
- A stay priced by the night, where the owner picks drop-off and pick-up days and sees the total.
- Spaces per night, so a 10-night stay is only offered if a space is free on every one of those nights.
- Per-pet pricing with an extra-pet discount, and pets from one family sharing a suite.
- Weekend or holiday extras per night, and a late pick-up fee.
- A day sheet of today’s drop-offs, pick-ups and pets in care.
An app made for boarding and daycare
Full disclosure: I make Pet Boarding: Kennel & Daycare. It adds a booking widget to your site for kennels, catteries and dog daycares, in your site’s currency and time zone.
Pet owners choose drop-off and pick-up days on a calendar that only offers dates with free spaces, pick a drop-off time and see the full price before they pay: each pet’s nights or days, a discount for extra pets, weekend or holiday extras and any late pick-up fee. They add each pet’s details and care notes, can upload a vaccination record (a PDF or photo, up to 5 MB), accept your terms and pay in full or a deposit through your site’s own checkout. The widget is in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Norwegian.
You set how many spaces you have per night or per day, and whether pets of one family share a suite. Prices can differ by pet size, with half days for daycare, long-stay discounts and closed days. The dashboard has a printable day sheet of drop-offs, pick-ups and pets in care, an occupancy calendar, every booking with its records and notes, and a form for bookings taken by phone. A private calendar link shows your bookings in your phone’s calendar.
What to know before you install it:
- Your site needs to be able to take orders. Online payments need a Premium plan that accepts payments and a connected payment provider.
- Each booking goes through checkout as one item, with the deposit shown as pay now and pay later when you take a deposit.
- Pet and owner details are cleared two years after the booking, and records are shown only in your site’s own dashboard.
- Every plan has every feature. Free takes bookings for one service (for example “Dog boarding”), Pro ($12.99 a month) for up to 4, and Business ($24.99 a month) for up to 50. Paid plans have a 14-day trial, and there’s no commission on bookings.
You can find it on the Wix App Market.
FAQ
Can Wix Bookings limit how many dogs I board per night? Not for overnight stays. Appointments are limited by staff time, not spaces, and there are no multi-night appointments. For daycare, a class with Max participants set to your number of spaces works.
Can customers upload vaccination records when they book on Wix? Yes. Add a file upload field to your Wix Bookings booking form, or to the request form if you confirm bookings by hand, and make it required.
Can I charge less for a second dog? Not with Wix Bookings’ own pricing, as far as I can tell. A booking app for boarding, or quoting by hand, is the way to do it.
Can I take a deposit for boarding? Wix Bookings has an online deposit option, though not on every account yet and not with manual approval. Pet Boarding takes a deposit at checkout as a percentage you choose.
