How to charge by square foot or square meter on Wix Stores
By Kayabyte
A banner, a vinyl sticker, a piece of glass: the price depends on the size the customer wants. Wix Stores sells products at a set price, so a shop that charges per square foot or per square meter runs into a wall quickly. Below is what Wix can and cannot do on its own, the workarounds, and an app that works out the price from the size the shopper types.
Can Wix Stores charge by size on its own?
No, not as far as I could find. Wix’s own help says that pricing a product by weight or size is not possible in Wix Stores. Product options and modifiers add a fixed amount to the price, for example +$10 for a laminated finish. They do not multiply anything by a number the customer types. Wix changes its products often, so check the current help pages before you rely on this.
That leaves a few ways around it.
Workaround 1: one variant per size
You create a product with an option such as Size, and give each choice its own price: 2 x 3 ft, 3 x 5 ft, 4 x 8 ft. The customer picks a size from a list.
This works well for a short list of standard sizes. It stops working when:
- customers want a size you did not list, such as 3.5 x 5.25 ft
- the combinations multiply. Wix limits how many options and variants one product can have, so a long list of widths and heights will not fit. Check the current limits in Wix’s help.
- you change your rate and have to edit every variant by hand
Workaround 2: Wix’s “price per unit” display
Wix Stores can show a unit price next to the product price, such as “$2.50 per 100 g” or “per m”. It is meant to help shoppers compare products sold by weight or volume.
It is a display. It shows a unit price based on the product’s own price and quantity. It does not read a size from the customer and it does not change the price in the cart. Useful for labeling, not for custom sizes.
Workaround 3: a calculator on the product page
A price calculator app adds size boxes to the product page. The shopper types a width and height, the app multiplies them by your rate, and the cart gets the result. You need to check a few things in any app of this kind:
- Does the price in the cart match the price on the page, and is it checked again when the order is placed, not only in the browser?
- Is the real Wix Stores product added to the cart, so stock, discounts and sales reports still work?
- Can you set a minimum price and a setup fee?
- Does the size show on the cart, checkout and order, so you know what to make?
Setting it up with our app
Full disclosure: Kayabyte makes Custom Size Price Calculator, so I describe it in more detail than the other options. The steps:
- Install it from the Wix App Market on a site with Wix Stores.
- In Wix Stores, set the product price to your price per unit, for example $2.50 for one square foot.
- In your dashboard, open Price calculators and pick a starting point such as Banners & signs. Choose your products and save.
- Choose the unit you charge in (ft or m for the sides, so the result is per ft² or m²), and set a setup fee, a minimum price or size limits if you want them.
- Publish your site, open the product on your live site, type a size and add it to the cart.
Shoppers see a small box under the product options with the size fields and the price as they type, plus a line that explains it. The real store product goes into the cart at the calculated price, and the size is printed on the cart, checkout and order. The price is calculated again on our server when the item is added.
The Free plan has 1 calculator on up to 3 products. Pro ($9.99 per month, with a 14-day free trial) adds more calculators, volume and custom formulas, and price tiers.
Worked example
You sell banners at $2.50 per square foot with a $5.00 setup fee. A customer types 3 ft wide by 5 ft high.
- Area: 3 x 5 = 15 ft²
- Price for the area: 15 x $2.50 = $37.50
- Plus setup fee: $37.50 + $5.00 = $42.50
The product line in the cart shows $42.50, and the order shows the size and the working out. If you set a minimum price of $20, a 1 x 2 ft banner (2 ft² = $5.00 + $5.00 setup = $10.00) would be charged $20 instead.
For square meters, set the unit to meters and the product price to your rate per m². A 0.9 x 1.5 m sign is 1.35 m², and at $30 per m² that is $40.50 before any setup fee.
FAQ
Can Wix Stores charge by square foot without an app? As far as I could find, no. Options add fixed amounts, and the unit price display only shows a figure. For a fixed list of sizes, variants work.
Does it work for square meters too? Yes. Sides can be in cm, m, mm, in, ft or yd, and you choose which units shoppers can pick from.
Can I round sizes up? Yes. You can round each side up, for example to whole feet, and round the total size up to a billing step.
Can the customer change the price? The browser only sends the size. The price is worked out on our server, and a checkout check stops any line of a calculator product that was added at the plain store price.
Do discounts and coupons work? Yes, they apply to the calculated price as usual.
