How do you recover deleted contacts on a Mac?
By Kayabyte · Last updated 2 November 2026
To recover deleted contacts on a Mac, try Edit, Undo in Contacts first, then restore a dated archive from iCloud.com (Account Settings, Data Recovery, Restore Contacts), and if the contacts are older than that, get them from a Time Machine or iPhone backup. Each step is free. NoteRescue is the faster way for the last one: it lists which cards your backups hold that you no longer have and writes them as .vcf files.
Step 1: undo, right now
If you just deleted a card, choose Edit, Undo in Contacts (Command-Z). It only works while Contacts stays open and before many other changes.
Step 2: check that the contacts are really gone
Contacts hides cards that belong to an account you turned off, and it can show an empty list while iCloud is syncing. In Contacts open Contacts, Settings, Accounts and check that each account is on, and look at the group list on the left: choose All Contacts rather than a single group.
Step 3: restore an iCloud archive
- On iCloud.com open Account Settings and find Data Recovery.
- Choose Restore Contacts, pick an archive from before the loss and restore it.
- Apple archives your current contacts first, so you can return to them. The restore replaces the contacts on every device that uses iCloud Contacts, so export today’s contacts first if you added any since.
Step 4: use a backup
Time Machine and iPhone backups keep older copies of your contacts. By hand that means swapping whole folders or restoring a phone; see restore contacts from Time Machine and restore iPhone contacts from a backup.
A faster way: NoteRescue
NoteRescue scans your Time Machine snapshots and iPhone backups (encrypted too) and compares the cards with your contacts today. The scan is free. It shows each card as missing or changed, with the backup date it came from.
Steps with NoteRescue
- Open NoteRescue, allow Full Disk Access and press Scan. Enter the backup password if an iPhone backup is encrypted.
- Open the Contacts row. Filter to Missing and select the cards you want.
- Choose a folder, recover, click Open in Contacts and click Import. The cards are added as new cards.
One card per app is free to recover as a proof; Contacts is USD 19.99, All apps USD 39.99. Download NoteRescue
What cannot come back
- A contact that was created and deleted between two backups is in no backup.
- From a Mac Time Machine snapshot the cards come back without photos and notes. iPhone backups can hold photos; we have not checked that on real photos yet.
- A card that was merged into another one shows as missing, and the card it was merged into as changed. Importing the missing card brings the duplicate back, so skip it if you merged on purpose.
- iCloud may sync an old state back over what you import or remove a restored card again. See why iCloud brings data back.
Questions
Is there a Recently Deleted folder for Contacts on a Mac? We did not find one in Contacts on macOS 26. Use Undo, an iCloud archive or a backup.
How far back can I go? As far back as your oldest backup or iCloud archive that still has the card.
Does NoteRescue need my Apple Account password? No. It never signs in to iCloud and reads only your backups and local data.
