How do you get a Safari Reading List back?

By Kayabyte · Last updated 2 November 2026

To get a Safari Reading List back, check that Safari is on in your iCloud settings on every device, look at the Reading List sidebar on each one, and try iCloud.com Data Recovery (Restore Bookmarks). If the list is older than that, the saved pages are in a Time Machine or iPhone backup. NoteRescue lists the missing Reading List items and writes them into a bookmarks file that Safari imports, where they arrive as ordinary bookmarks.

Check these first (free)

  1. Open the Reading List sidebar. On the Mac choose View, Show Reading List Sidebar. If you chose Show Unread, switch to Show All, because read items are hidden otherwise.
  2. Check iCloud. In your iCloud settings make sure Safari is on on every device. Reading List syncs through the same setting as bookmarks, and a device that was offline may still hold the list.
  3. Copy before it syncs. If one device still shows the list, copy the page addresses from it first, for example by selecting the items in the sidebar and dragging them into a note.
  4. iCloud.com. Account Settings, Data Recovery, Restore Bookmarks lists archives from before the loss. Restoring replaces the bookmarks on all devices, with the current ones archived first.

From Time Machine by hand

Safari keeps the Reading List inside the same file as your bookmarks, ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist. You can restore an older copy to your Desktop from Time Machine, but Safari cannot open the file, and swapping the live file while iCloud is on is risky; see restore Safari bookmarks from Time Machine.

A faster way: NoteRescue

NoteRescue reads the Reading List in your Time Machine snapshots (and tries iPhone backups, which we tested for bookmarks but not for Reading List items) and compares it with Safari today. The scan lists the missing and changed items for free.

Steps with NoteRescue

  1. Open NoteRescue, allow Full Disk Access and press Scan.
  2. Open the Safari row, filter to Missing and select the Reading List items.
  3. Choose a folder and recover. In Safari choose File, Import Browsing Data from File or Folder and pick the HTML file.
  4. Find the pages in your bookmarks and add them to the Reading List again (right-click, Add to Reading List).

Safari is USD 14.99, or USD 39.99 for all apps. One item is free as a proof. Download NoteRescue

Questions

Where is the Safari Reading List stored? In Bookmarks.plist in ~/Library/Safari on the Mac, with the bookmarks.

Does Time Machine keep my Reading List? Yes, as part of that file, and Full Disk Access is needed to read it.

Why did my Reading List disappear? Usually a sync problem or Safari being switched off in iCloud on a device. We found no single official cause.
