How do you restore Calendar events from Time Machine?

By Kayabyte · Last updated 2 November 2026

To restore Calendar events from Time Machine by hand, quit Calendar, make a safety copy of the Calendar data, restore an older copy from a backup made before the loss, copy the events out as an archive, and put today’s data back. Calendar has no “restore one event” in Time Machine, so the manual way swaps your whole calendar twice. NoteRescue reads the snapshot directly and writes only the events you choose as .ics files.

Where Calendar keeps its data

On the macOS 26 virtual Mac we tested, the Calendar database was in ~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.calendar (Calendar.sqlitedb), not in ~/Library/Calendars, which older guides name. Other macOS versions may differ. Open the folder with Go, Go to Folder in Finder. macOS may ask you to give Finder Full Disk Access.

Method: swap, export, swap back

We have not tested this manual swap ourselves, so use the safety copy and expect to adapt it.

  1. Quit Calendar and turn Wi-Fi off, so iCloud cannot sync an old state.
  2. Copy the group.com.apple.calendar folder to your Desktop and rename the copy calendar today.
  3. Choose Browse Time Machine Backups, go back to a date when the events existed, select the folder and restore it.
  4. Open Calendar, still offline. Select the calendar you need and choose File, Export, Calendar Archive (or export single events by dragging them to the Desktop). Quit Calendar.
  5. Move the restored folder to the Trash and rename calendar today back to group.com.apple.calendar. Turn Wi-Fi on, open Calendar and use File, Import on the archive, choosing a new calendar.

If Calendar looks wrong afterwards, quit it, check the folder name is exact and that it is your safety copy, and only then go online.

Cheaper first steps

Try Edit, Undo, tick every calendar in the sidebar and look at iCloud.com Account Settings, Data Recovery, Restore Calendars and Reminders. See recover deleted Calendar events.

A faster way: NoteRescue

Questions

Does Time Machine back up Calendar? Yes; see what Time Machine keeps for each app.

Can NoteRescue read events from an iPhone backup? Yes. We tested events in two real encrypted iPhone backups and the counts matched.

Do I need to go offline with NoteRescue? No; it does not swap anything. Going offline only matters for the manual swap.
