Why did my Safari tab groups disappear, and can you get them back?

By Kayabyte · Last updated 2 November 2026

Safari tab groups usually disappear because they are hidden, not deleted: you are in a different Safari profile, the sidebar is closed, or iCloud sync for Safari was switched off or reset. Check those first. If a group was deleted, the only older copy is in a Time Machine or iPhone backup, and NoteRescue can list the group and its tabs from there. It brings them back as a bookmark folder and an address list, because Safari cannot import tab groups.

Check these first (free)

  1. Show the sidebar. On the Mac choose View, Show Sidebar. Tab groups are listed there, and a group you are not in is not shown in the tab bar.
  2. Check the profile. In Safari 17 and later each profile has its own tab groups. Look at the profile menu and switch profiles.
  3. Check iCloud for Safari. In System Settings, open your Apple Account, iCloud, and make sure Safari is on, on every device. If it was off or you signed out, groups may differ per device.
  4. Check the other devices. A group deleted on one device is deleted everywhere. A device that was offline may still show it; open Safari there before it syncs, and copy the tab addresses out.
  5. Recently closed. In History choose Reopen Last Closed Tab, Reopen Last Closed Window or Reopen All Windows from Last Session if you only closed the windows.

If a group really was deleted

We found no undo and no tab-group archive in iCloud.com Data Recovery. iCloud.com’s Data Recovery can restore bookmarks (see restore Safari bookmarks), but it does not list tab groups.

The older copy is in your backups. Safari keeps tab groups in a file called SafariTabs.db inside its container (~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari/Data/Library/Safari). You can browse Time Machine to that folder, but swapping the file by hand risks your current tabs and iCloud may overwrite it, so we do not recommend it as a first move.

A faster way: NoteRescue

NoteRescue reads tab groups in your Time Machine snapshots and iPhone backups and compares them with Safari today. The scan lists each group as missing or changed, with its tabs and the backup date. It writes one address list per group and a bookmarks HTML file; it never writes into Safari’s own data.

Steps with NoteRescue

  1. Open NoteRescue, allow Full Disk Access and press Scan.
  2. Open the Safari row and select the missing tab groups.
  3. Choose a folder and recover. In Safari choose File, Import Browsing Data from File or Folder (older macOS: File, Import From, Bookmarks HTML File) and pick the HTML file.
  4. Open the folder under “Tab Groups” in the bookmarks, open its bookmarks in new tabs and add them to a new tab group.

Safari is USD 14.99, or USD 39.99 for all apps; one item is free as a proof. Download NoteRescue

Questions

Why do my tab groups disappear after an update? We found no official explanation. The usual causes are a changed profile, a sync reset or Safari signed out of iCloud; check the steps above on each device.

Does Time Machine back up Safari tab groups? Yes, SafariTabs.db is in your user Library and is part of a normal backup, but Safari’s folders are protected, so reading them needs Full Disk Access.

Will the restored group sync to my iPhone? The bookmark folder syncs if bookmarks sync via iCloud. The tab group only exists once you create it again.
