How do you restore iPhone contacts from a backup on a Mac?

By Kayabyte · Last updated 2 November 2026

To restore iPhone contacts from a backup made on your Mac, you can either restore the whole backup to the phone in Finder, which replaces everything on the phone with the backup, or read the contacts out of the backup and import only the cards you need. Finder only does the first. NoteRescue does the second: it opens the backup (encrypted ones too, with your backup password) and writes the cards as .vcf files.

Protect the backup first

Finder keeps one backup per device, and a new backup replaces the old one. Before anything else, do not back up the iPhone again. In Finder select the iPhone, click Manage Backups and check the date of the backup. To keep it, right-click it and choose Archive, or copy it somewhere safe.

Method 1: restore only contacts from iCloud.com

If iCloud Contacts was on, open Account Settings, Data Recovery, Restore Contacts on iCloud.com and pick an archive from before the loss. It restores to every device and archives the current contacts first.

Method 2: restore the whole phone from the backup

  1. Connect the iPhone, select it in Finder and click Restore Backup.
  2. Choose the backup and enter its password if it is encrypted.

Everything on the phone goes back to the backup date: messages, photos and settings too. With iCloud Contacts on, the phone may sync the contacts again afterwards. This is a heavy fix for a few missing cards.

A faster way: NoteRescue

NoteRescue reads the contacts inside iPhone backups in the Finder backup folder, without touching the phone. It compares them with the contacts on your Mac and lists the missing or changed ones. iPhone backups can hold photos, not yet checked on real photos.

Steps with NoteRescue

  1. Open NoteRescue and press Scan. If the backup is encrypted, enter the password you chose when you turned on “Encrypt local backup” (not your passcode or Apple Account password).
  2. Open the Contacts row and select the cards you need.
  3. Choose a folder and recover, click Open in Contacts and click Import.

Contacts is USD 19.99 or USD 39.99 for all apps; one card is free as a proof. Download NoteRescue

Questions

Can I read an iPhone backup without restoring my phone? Yes, with a tool that reads the backup file. See how to read an encrypted iPhone backup on a Mac.

Where are iPhone backups on a Mac? In ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup. NoteRescue looks there by itself, and you can add a copied folder.
