How to see what slipped across monday.com boards
By Kayabyte
Short answer: monday’s Gantt baseline saves a snapshot on a Gantt so you can compare the plan with today, on Pro and Enterprise. To see what slipped across many boards, you need a baseline per board, a copy of the dates in columns, or an app that keeps a baseline across all of them.
“What slipped since last month?” is the first question in most steering meetings. Boards show today’s dates, so the old dates are gone unless you kept them.
Option 1: the Gantt baseline
monday.com’s article describes it this way:
- Open the Gantt and click Baseline.
- Choose Add a new snapshot under Baselines.
- Later, tick a snapshot to show it. It appears as a grey shadow in the original position.
What to know:
- It’s on Pro and Enterprise.
- Set your Timeline and Date columns first, as a snapshot can’t be edited.
- You read it by eye on the chart. There’s no list of what moved, as far as we can tell.
Option 2: copy the dates to a column
- Add a Date column called Baseline end.
- Fill it with the planned date, by hand or with an automation when an item is created.
- Add a Formula column:
DAYS({End}, {Baseline end}). - Sort or filter by that column, or chart it on a dashboard.
What to know:
- It gives you a number per item, on any plan with formulas.
- You need it on every board, and re-baselining means overwriting the column, so the earlier plan is lost.
Option 3: an activity log check
The board’s Activity log shows who changed which date. It’s useful for one item when you already know something moved, and too slow for a portfolio.
Option 4: a baseline across boards
Portfolio Roadmap & Timeline is our app. It keeps the dates of every item on a roadmap, across up to 500 boards.
- Save a baseline with a label, such as Q4 plan, or take one every Monday or on the 1st automatically (Pro).
- Compare: a thin bar shows the old dates, each row shows days moved, and What changed lists what moved later, earlier, was added or removed, largest first.
- It rolls up, so one bar per board shows how a whole project’s end date moved.
- Ask Sidekick “what slipped?” for the same answer in chat.
Baselines are on the Basic plan and up. See Portfolio Roadmap & Timeline.
Make the answer useful
- Baseline at a moment that means something, such as the approved plan, not at a random date.
- Compare end dates first. Start dates move often without consequences.
- Treat added and removed items separately. A project that looks on time may have dropped scope.
- Ask why for the top few, not all of them.
Common questions
Can I have several baselines? In monday’s Gantt you can switch between snapshots. Our app keeps up to 24 per roadmap.
Does a baseline change my board? No. In our app it’s stored by the app, and the app can’t write to boards.
