How do you convert a Wells Fargo statement to CSV?
By Kayabyte · Last updated 2 November 2026
Use Wells Fargo’s own account activity download first: it gives you a CSV for recent transactions straight from online banking. For older months, which exist as PDF statements, convert the PDF and check that the result adds up to the closing balance. We are not affiliated with Wells Fargo, and the labels on their site change.
1. Try the activity download first
In Wells Fargo online banking, open the account and look for a download option on the account activity page (a link such as “Download Account Activity” is typical, but labels change). You can choose a date range and a file type, and a comma delimited (spreadsheet) file is the one you want. Wells Fargo’s own business banking page says the default download covers the last 90 days and that up to 18 months of activity may be available if you pick the extended time frame. Check the range offered for your own account, because it depends on the account type.
Things to know:
- Credit card and checking downloads can have different columns. Open the file and read the headers.
- Debits and credits may be in one signed column. Check the signs before you total anything.
- Excel may read dates in the wrong order, so check the date column.
2. For older months: the PDF statements
Monthly statements are PDFs under the statements and documents area of online banking. They stay available for a long time, but how long differs by account type, so look at what your account lists. A PDF stores text by position, so copying it into a spreadsheet often splits wrapped descriptions and repeats page headers. Compare any result with the opening balance, the deposits and withdrawals totals and the closing balance on the statement: opening balance + deposits - withdrawals = closing balance.
3. Where Balanced helps
Balanced is a Mac app we make. It reads the statement PDF (or a scan, or a CSV) on your Mac; nothing is uploaded and there is no AI guessing. The preview shows the table it found, you can fix column roles, date order and sign handling, and the totals check compares opening balance plus transactions with the closing balance. For a Wells Fargo credit card statement, turn on “Card statement (flip signs)” so purchases export as money out.
Limits to know: the free version converts and checks everything but exports the first 10 transactions per file, and Balanced Pro (USD 59 per year or USD 7.99 per month) exports everything. Layouts differ, so look at the preview; poor scans can fail, and a password-protected PDF has to be unlocked first. Download Balanced and test your own statement.
Steps with Balanced
- Download the statement PDF from Wells Fargo online banking, or the activity CSV for recent months.
- Open the file in Balanced with Add Files or by dragging it in.
- Check the preview table, fix any column role, date order or sign handling, and read the totals check.
- Export CSV (or Excel, QBO, OFX or the format your software imports).
- Spot-check three or four transactions against the statement before you import.
Questions
Does Wells Fargo let you download transactions as CSV? Yes, account activity can be downloaded in a spreadsheet-friendly file, for a limited date range. Wells Fargo’s business banking page describes 90 days by default and up to 18 months in an extended view; your account may differ, so check the download panel.
How do I get statements older than the download allows? Use the PDF statements and convert them. Balanced reads them on your Mac, but the free version only exports the first 10 transactions per file.
Why do my credit card amounts look backwards? Card statements print purchases as positive numbers. Use “Card statement (flip signs)” and let the totals check confirm the result.
